Turkey that has a critical geopolitics is a rising star because of location. Its importance has been debated in all political environments for years. But after the TANAP project, Turkey’s importance has been brought to the arena once more. Because of this reason, such international conferences, forums and panels that touching upon to mentioned strategic topic have been organized.
Especially the pipelines security which is an important part of energy security area has been discussed in those days. The pipelines security is the hot topic because the area where natural gas and oil produced is under the terrorist threats. When the pipelines security is matter of discussion, terrorist threats are the first threat that are come to mind. Theft is the second threat for the pipelines. Disasters are usually underestimated when all threats are evaluated. It is reasonable that terrorist attacks and theft are the frequently encountered problems. But these threats directly attack to one single point and their target is only the pipelines. They attack a point on the pipelines, whereas the disaster could affect an area that consists sometimes kilometers long. At the same time disasters could cause loss of lives, economic loss and demolitions of buildings.
Depending on the extent of damage, Recovery priorities could be changed. In comparison with life saving activities, Pipelines are not the only elements that must be secured and responded when disaster occurs. Because of these reasons, disaster effects should be primarily taken into considerations , and should be listed as the main threat like terrorist attacks and theft. The countries located in disasters area like Turkey should add this threat as a most likely threat in to their security plans for pipelines.
